1. The Violence of the Allied Bombing

Every single darkened stone bears witness, in the most tangible way, to a deeply painful wound that has never fully healed, inflicted in February 1945. Only two months remained before the end of the Second World War; the outcome of the conflict had already been decided, the Nazi regime was collapsing, and Germany's surrender was only a matter of time.

During that winter—described by contemporary accounts as one of the harshest on record—for three consecutive days and nights, hell descended from the skies. First the Royal Air Force, followed immediately by the United States Army Air Forces, unleashed upon the city a firestorm without precedent. The objective was not industrial plants or strategic military targets. Rather, the deliberately chosen and carefully planned target of the Allied command was the civilian districts: the historic heart of a city of culture crowded with refugees, women, elderly people and children fleeing the advance of the Red Army.

2. Twenty-Five Thousand Victims in a Matter of Hours

Why such horror when victory had already been secured? Was it ruthless revenge, harboured by Britain after the devastating bombing of London and Coventry? Or was it instead a cynical demonstration of overwhelming military power aimed at the Soviet forces advancing rapidly from the east, intended to display Western supremacy?

Whatever the geopolitical reasoning, the outcome on the ground was the complete annihilation of humanity itself. The sequence of the attack was designed with scientific cruelty: first high-explosive bombs to tear off roofs and shatter windows, then phosphorus incendiary bombs to ignite the interiors of buildings. Thus emerged the Feuersturm—the firestorm—an artificial hurricane that sucked the oxygen from the streets and generated temperatures exceeding 1,000 degrees Celsius.

The scenes that followed were truly Dantean, displaying an atrocity that defies human comprehension. Those who desperately sought refuge in the city's large water reservoirs were literally boiled alive, as the heat transformed entire districts into furnaces that consumed the oxygen and charred bodies before the flames themselves could even reach them. An official historical investigation, completed in 2004 after years of painstaking verification intended to remove the distortions of wartime propaganda, concluded that at least 25,000 people lost their lives. Twenty-five thousand human beings were killed within a matter of hours. They were not soldiers on the battlefield but defenceless civilians. Innocent lives sacrificed on the altar of a military strategy that had lost every moral compass.

3. Dresden Teaches Us That There Are No Smart Bombs

Today, as one walks between the Frauenkirche, risen from its ashes, and the splendour of the Zwinger Palace, this awareness weighs heavily upon the heart. The more years pass, the more I accompany people through places of remembrance, the stronger one conviction becomes—unyielding, absolute and beyond negotiation: the door to war must never be opened, for any reason whatsoever. Never.

There are no just wars. There are no smart bombs. There are no acceptable "collateral casualties" once humanity chooses to unleash barbarity. The very moment that cursed threshold is crossed, we lose our own face, forget our humanity, erase the future and rob the generations yet to come of hope.

4. Dresden Is a Warning

Dresden is not merely a chapter of history to be studied coldly in textbooks. It is a universal warning carved in stone, a silent cry that for eighty years has continued to remind us that violence produces nothing but emptiness.

Unless we learn to safeguard peace as our most sacred treasure, we shall remain condemned to burn in the hell that our own blindness continues to build.
